Mark your calendars! September 16-18, 2016 will be the next Spectrum dance Festival.



Dance Initiative presents the 6th annual Spectrum Dance Festival celebrating the art of dance in all its forms through demos, studio performance, film screenings, and an outstanding series of workshops for the Roaring Fork Valley Community. Join them on Friday, Sept. 29 at 6p.m. at The Launchpad for a Happy Hour Dance Demo & Screening of the acclaimed dance documentary, "Mr. Gaga," or register for one of many youth and adult workshops in House/Hip Hop, Modern, African Dance or Aerial Silks. Dance Initiative’s Artists In Residence,  the STAYCEE PEARL Dance Project (SPdp), of Pittsburg, PA, conclude the festival with studio performance at 7:30p.m. at The Launchpad. Friday: Sept. 29: Kick Off Party & Movie Night

Dance Initiative kicks off this weekend of dance with a Happy Hour Reception and the screening of the internationally acclaimed documentary Mr. Gaga. Come to The Launchpad at 6p.m. for libations, snacks, and House Demos by the company members of the STAYCEE PEARL dance project, a taste of Denver’s Control Group Productions and the trailer of local outdoor dance film project Letter To Congress: A WILD Sanity. The film, Mr. Gaga, begins at 7p.m. and documents the artistic life of Ohad Naharin, artistic director of the Batsheva Dance Company. Naharin is regarded as one of the most important choreographers in the world. This spirited and insightful documentary will introduce you to a man with great artistic integrity and an extraordinary vision. Filmed over a period of eight years, director Tomer Heymann mixes intimate rehearsal footage with an extensive unseen archive and breathtaking dance sequences. This story of an artistic genius who redefined the language of modern dance is guaranteed to leave you skipping. ONLY $5 for admission!

The STAYCEE PEARL dance project (SPdp) of Pittsburg, PA concludes the Spectrum Dance Festival with studio performance of a work in progress and their work Flowerz. SPdp strives to interpret and mirror culture and community through dance and dance centered multi-media experiences. With diverse casting and programming, SPdp explores innovative conceptual possibilities while participating in meaningful collaboration. SPdp produces programming around compelling concepts and themes often inspired by social/political world issues. SPdp occasionally examines the works of celebrated legendary and contemporary artists of the African Diaspora. Examples of such projects includes OCTAVIA, which explores the life and work of famed African American Science Fiction novelist, Octavia Butler, and ...on being... which began as an investigation of the broad Post-Black conversation. Artists who inspire the work of SPdp include legendary Jazz vocalist Abbey Lincoln, Jimi Hendrix, and literary artists Alice Walker and Gabriel Garcia Márquez. Visual artists whose methods inform the visual imagery of the creative team’s work include contemporary, Nairobi-born, visual artist Wangechi Mutu, the late Jean-Michel Basquiat, and the mysterious graffiti artist, BANKSY. These artist are admired for their magical aesthetics that are combined with a gritty, honest, and original world perspective. Reservations are recommended as space is limited. Tickets are $15
