Dance Initiative kicks off this weekend of dance with a Happy Hour Reception and the screening of If the Dancer Dances. Come to The Launchpad at 6p.m. for libations, snacks, and a dance demo by Brian and Claudia Pawl of Mezcla Socials dance collective.
If the Dancer Dances film screening commences at 7pm. Film makers Lise Friedman & Maia Wechsler invite viewers into the intimate world of the dance studio, where three former members of the Merce Cunningham Dance Company teach Cunningham's 1968 RainForest to the Stephen Petronio Company. Unlike a painting, dance exists only in the moment. If a dance is not danced, it vanishes. If the Dancer Dances brings viewers into the intimate and tactile world of the dance studio, as a group of New York’s top modern dancers struggle to reconstruct an iconic work by the legendary Merce Cunningham. Timed to coincide with Cunningham’s centennial, the film tracks the dancers’ often intensely personal challenges, as they reveal what it takes to keep a dance alive. If the Dancer Dances is the first documentary on the subject of Cunningham’s work since his passing.
